Fashion knows no borders, including North Korean ones.
"Imitation" handbags and fashion wear from Prada and Dior are enjoying new popularity among North Korean women.
Radio Free Asia reported recently that an article, "The rise of fashion in North Korea," was published in "Dazed & Confused" by a freelancer named Lu-Hai Liang.
Liang posted pictures of young North Korean women wearing designer clothes and carrying designer handbags. This sudden boom in fashion is speculated to be the result of a desire to imitate Ri Sol Ju, the wife of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
But the fashion boom comes as a surprise to many because North Korea has been enforcing a strict sartorial limit until now. The fake handbags and fashion wear seem to be imported from China.

북한 여성들 사이에서 ‘프라다’와 ‘크리스챤 디올’ 같은 명품 핸드백과 옷들의 ‘짝퉁’이 성행을 하고 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다.
최근 미국 자유아시아방송에 프리랜서인 량루하이가 ‘대이즈드 앤 컨퓨즈드’에 기고한 ‘북한 패션의 부흥’했다는 소식을 보도했다.
량루하이씨는 이 기고에서 젊은 북한 여성들이 디자이너 옷들과 핸드백을 들고 다니는 사진을 기재하였다. 이 급작스러운 패션 열품은 여성들이 김정은 국방위원회 제1위원장의 부인인 리설주를 떠라 하고 싶어하는 하는 마음에 생긴 열풍으로 추측되고 있다.
하지만 북한은 지금까지 의류 제한에 있어서 매우 철저히 관리해왔기에 이번 기사가 많은 사람들을 놀래 키고 있다. 이런 ‘짝퉁’ 디자이너 물품들은 중국을 통해서 북한으로 들어가고 있는 것으로 추측되고 있다.
