Rio 2016: S. Korea clinches 2 bronze medals on day 13

By Baek Byung-yeul

South Korea bagged two bronze medals -- in badminton and taekwondo -- on the 13th day of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. In women's golf, the country's golfing legend Park In-bee kept cruising, posting back-to-back rounds of 66 to earn a second-round lead at 10 under par.

The first bronze came in badminton as Jung Kyung-eun and Shin Seung-chan defeated Tang Yuanting and Yu Yang of China 2-0 (21-8, 21-17) in the women's doubles bronze medal match.

South Korea had been a powerhouse in the sport, clinching six gold medals since badminton was first contested in the 1992 Olympics -- the second-highest gold-medal-winning country before the Rio Olympics.

But South Korea was on the verge of finishing the badminton event without any Olympic medals for the first time since 1992, as two singles players and four doubles pairs were knocked out in the quarterfinals. Jung and Shin were the last South Koreans in the tournament.

South Korea aimed to win a taekwondo gold medal for the second straight day following Kim So-hui's gold medal in the women's 49kg category on Wednesday. But the country's strong medal contender Lee Dae-hoon wrapped up with bronze in the men's 68kg category after fierce bouts.

Lee lost to Ahmad Abughaush of Jordan in the quarterfinal but received a second chance in the repechage when the Jordanian advanced to the final.

Lee defeated Ahmed Ghofran of Egypt 14-6 in the repechage and won over Jaouad Achab of Belgium 11-7 in the bronze medal match.

In golf, besides Park, South Korean fans also have their eyes on Yang Hee-young (four under), Kim Sei-young (three under) and Chun In-gee (six under).
