Bronze medalist displays true Olympic spirit

Taekwondo fighter Lee Dae-hoon was South Korea's probable gold medal winner in the men's 68 kg weight class at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Though he fell short of expectations, clinching one of two bronze medals in the category, Lee shined more than anyone, displaying how the Olympic spirit is alive in taekwondo and how exciting taekwondo is.
Lee, who was a ruler in his primary weight class of 63 kg, reduced his weight to compete in the 58 kg class for the 2012 London Olympics as there is no such category as 63kg in the Olympics. After facing difficulties losing weight, however, Lee placed second as he lost to Spain's Joel Gonzalez in the final at London.
Lee, who decided to compete in a heavier weight class in the following Olympics, began competing in the 68 kg class at international competitions beginning last year and was ranked second in the world.
However, his dream to stand atop the Olympic podium has gone for naught, Thursday, as the 24-year-old was stunned by the world no. 40 Ahmad Abughaush of Jordan 11-8 in the quarterfinal.
Although the loss was disappointing for him, Lee didn't turn on his heels and leave the stage. Instead, he gave a big applause to Abughaush and raised the Jordanian's hand up to celebrate the win.
“When a loser can't accept defeat, then the winner won't be able to enjoy his victory,” Lee said. “But if the loser accepts the results, the winner can enjoy it even more. I thought it was all part of good sportsmanship.”

Despite his defeat in the quarterfinals, Lee received a second chance in the repechage as Abughaush could reach the final. After beating Ahmed Ghofran of Egypt 14-6 in the repechage, Lee met the world's top competitor Jaouad Achab of Belgium in the bronze medal match.
The bronze match was a hard-fought bout full of high kicks.
Achab looked more dangerous in the beginning, landing a triple round-kick combo. The Belgian took the lead as he fired a three-point round kick to Lee's head.
It was Lee's turn in the second. With his out-of-nowhere kick, Lee evened the match at 3-3 and went ahead at 4-3 with a follow-up body kick. The second round ended in a draw at 4-4 as Achab landed an equalizer again.
The Belgian took a 5-4 lead in the third, but Lee threw an axe kick to make the score 7-5 and then another head kick for a 10-5 lead. Achab pushed hard with his flurry of kicks but that was it.
Despite the disappointing results, Lee said his bronze meant as much as the gold would have.
“Though I lost in the quarterfinals, I did my best as I received the precious repechage. And I am very glad to bring home the bronze. To me, it is more priceless than the gold medal,” he said.
President Park Geun-hye also praised Lee's sportsmanship and performance at the Rio Olympics. “Our country is proud of Lee Dae-hoon who showed the spirit of taekwondo to the world while truly enjoying the competition himself,” Park said in her congratulatory letter to Lee, Friday.

이대훈, 2회 연속 메달…68㎏급 동메달
이대훈(24·한국가스공사)이 금메달 사냥에는 실패했지만 한국 남자 태권도 선수로는 처음으로 2회 연속 올림픽 메달을 목에 걸었다.
이대훈은 19일 오전(한국시간) 브라질 리우데자네이루 올림픽파크 카리오카 아레나3에서 열린 2016 리우올림픽 태권도 남자 68㎏급 동메달결정전에서 자우아드 아찹(벨기에)을 11-7로 꺾었다.
이로써 이대훈은 값진 동메달을 수확해 한국 남자 태권도 선수로는 처음으로 2회 연속 올림픽 메달리스트로 이름을 올렸다.
여자 선수 중에서는 황경선(고양시청)이 2004년 아테네 대회 67㎏급 동메달에 이어 2008년 베이징 대회와 2012년 런던 대회 같은 체급에서 2연패를 달성해 3회 연속 메달을 획득한 바 있다.
2012년 런던올림픽 58㎏급에서 은메달을 목에 걸었던 이대훈은 자신의 두 번째 올림픽인 이번 리우 대회에서는 68㎏급으로 올려 출전했다.
태권도에서 체급을 달리해 2회 연속 올림픽 메달을 딴 한국 선수는 남녀를 통틀어 이대훈이 처음이다.
아쉬움도 남지만 잘 싸운 이대훈이었다.
세계선수권대회(2011, 2013년), 아시안게임(2010, 2014년), 아시아선수권대회(2012, 2014년)에서 이미 2연패를 이룬 이대훈은 올림픽에서 금메달만 따면 태권도 4대 메이저 대회에서 모두 우승하는 그랜드슬램을 달성할 수 있었다.
이대훈은 첫 경기(16강전)에서 다비드 실베레 파트리크 부이(중앙아프리카공화국)에게 1라운드 종료 후 기권승을 거두고 가볍게 8강에 올랐다.
하지만 8강에서 아흐마드 아부가우시(요르단)에게 8-11로 져 준결승 진출이 좌절됐다.
이후 아부가우시가 준결승에서 호엘 곤살레스 보니야(스페인)마저 12-7로 꺾고 결승에 올라 이대훈은 패자부활전을 통해 동메달을 챙길 수 있었다.
이대훈과 동메달을 놓고 다툰 아찹은 세계태권도연맹(WTF) 올림픽 랭킹 세계 1위다. 이대훈이 세계 2위다.
둘은 세계 1, 2위답게 명승부를 펼쳤다.
이대훈은 1라운드 종료 직전 아찹의 왼발에 헤드기어를 맞아 0-3으로 끌려갔다.
2라운드 시작하자마자 역시 상단 공격으로 맞서 3-3 균형을 맞춘 뒤 왼발로 몸통을 차 4-3으로 역전까지 시켰다.
하지만 한점을 빼앗겨 2라운드를 4-4로 마쳤다.
3라운드에서 다시 먼저 한 점을 내준 이대훈은 경기 종료 25초를 남겨놓고 아찹의 얼굴을 차 7-5로 다시 전세를 뒤집었다.
이 과정에서 왼쪽 무릎 쪽에 통증을 호소하며 얼굴을 찡그렸지만, 끝까지 포기하지 않았다.
오히려 서두르는 아찹을 상대로 다시 한 번 석 점짜리 얼굴 공격을 성공시켜 쐐기를 박았다. (연합뉴스)
