Colorful 'harbingers of spring' to flower from mid-March

By Park Si-soo

Forsythias, azaleas and other flowers marking the arrival of spring on the Korean Peninsula are expected to bloom from mid-March.

Private weather forecaster K Weather said Monday average temperatures were higher than in previous years, leading to early blooming of spring flowers ― around March 15 on Jeju Island, March 22 in Daejeon and central areas and March 24 in Seoul.

The forecaster said the dates were up to four days earlier than in previous years.

Blooming of forsythias and azaleas has long been considered to signal the arrival of spring in Korea.

They are expected to reach full bloom in late March or early April, according to the forecaster.
