President Yoon Suk Yeol will seek to hold bilateral talks with Japanese and Chinese leaders, as well as a trilateral meeting between South Korea, the U.S., and Japan, during his participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Peru and the G20 Summit in Brazil, the presidential office said, Tuesday.

The presidential office also said it is in contact with aides to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to arrange a possible meeting with Yoon during the South Korean president's trip.

"The bilateral meeting between South Korea and Japan is actively being coordinated, with a high likelihood of it taking place. Similarly, a summit between South Korea and China is also under discussion, making it highly likely as well," an official from the presidential office said.

He added that arrangements are also underway to organize a trilateral meeting among the leaders of South Korea, the U.S., and Japan during this presidential visit to South America, although it has not yet been confirmed.

Whether a meeting between Yoon and Trump will take place this time has also drawn significant media attention. The official did not elaborate, saying only that the presidential office is "maintaining close communication with the Trump transition team."

In addition to the potential summits, Yoon has a busy, week-long itinerary filled with multilateral diplomatic events.

The South Korean president will arrive in Lima, Peru, on Thursday (local time). On Friday, Yoon will begin his schedule at the APEC Summit with an informal dialogue involving member countries as well as non-member states.

"During the first session of this APEC Summit, which will be held under the theme of promoting welfare and inclusive growth, the leaders of various countries are expected to discuss cooperative measures for inclusive economic growth and support for vulnerable groups," Kim Tae-hyo, principal deputy national security adviser, said during a press briefing at the presidential office in Seoul, Tuesday.

Yoon will then participate in a luncheon dialogue with members of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) and attend the CEO Summit handover ceremony, where he is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech. Later in the day, Yoon will join the leaders' gala dinner hosted by Peruvian President Dina Boluarte.

On Saturday, Yoon will participate in the second session of the APEC Summit, a retreat reserved exclusively for leaders of member states. This session will feature open discussions on APEC's role in addressing global challenges, including strategies for inclusive economic growth through digitalization, energy transition, and reducing food waste.

At the end of the retreat session, a handover ceremony for the APEC chairmanship will take place, during which Yoon will assume the role from Peru, the current chair. South Korea is set to lead next year's APEC, hosting the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Gyeongju, a historic city in the southeastern part of the country.

As of 2022, APEC is the world's largest regional cooperation body, representing 61 percent of global GDP and 45 percent of international trade volume.

Following his APEC engagements, the South Korean president will commence his official visit to Peru with a welcoming ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Lima.

After their summit, the two leaders will share the outcomes of their countries' defense industry cooperation at a joint press conference.

On Sunday, the South Korean president will travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the G20 Summit. This will be Yoon's third appearance at the G20, following the 2022 summit in Bali and last year's event in New Delhi.

Yoon will attend the G20 Summit meetings from Monday to Tuesday, expressing support for the global coalition to combat hunger and poverty, an initiative led by this year's chair, Brazil. The South Korean president will also emphasize the need for stronger global cooperation to address the climate crisis and transition to clean energy.

"The president will underscore that a rules-based international order must be upheld above all for a sustainable future for the global community and will emphasize the need for international solidarity regarding the military cooperation between Russia and North Korea," Kim stressed.

Meanwhile, Yoon is expected to hold several bilateral talks with the leaders of key South American countries during the APEC and G20 summits.
