Kim Sung-su, the director of the film "12.12: The Day" (2023), criticized the short-lived Dec. 3 martial law fiasco, describing it as "a reckless coup by an out-of-his-mind president." He made the remarks while accepting the Best Director award at the 11th Korean Film Producers Association Awards held in Mapo District, Seoul, on Tuesday.

In his acceptance speech, Kim addressed President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law declaration, saying, "That day, citizens rushed to the National Assembly, young people across the country voiced their support for impeachment, and I realized why our film has resonated so strongly with audiences."

Released in November last year, 12.12: The Day depicts the 1979 military coup by the new regime. The film has attracted over 13 million viewers and, following recent political events, has seen a resurgence on various streaming platforms with a surge in viewership.

Resonating with younger generations

Kim revealed his initial uncertainties about the film's reception, particularly among younger audiences. "While preparing and releasing the movie, I was filled with anxiety, unsure if audiences, especially the younger generation, would come to theaters to watch it," he said.

Reflecting on the protests that followed the declaration of martial law, Kim praised the younger generation for their strong sense of justice. As President Yoon's impeachment motion passed through the National Assembly, people in their 20s and 30s brought creativity to protests by singing songs and waving light sticks at rallies.

"I realized that today's young people hold a strong and righteous belief in justice," Kim said. "As a filmmaker, it makes me think deeply about what stories to tell them and how to deliver those stories in ways different from the past."

He added, "As a storyteller engaging with a new era of audiences, I also feel a sense of excitement."

At the awards ceremony, "12.12: The Day" emerged as a big winner, taking home five awards, including Best Director, Best Picture, Best Cinematography and Best Music.

Hosted by the Korean Film Producers Association, the event recognizes outstanding achievements in Korean cinema over the past year.
