No one expected surviving the audition would be a step forward to an unforgettable experience.
The chosen 33 amateur choir members of KBS 2TV "Happy Sunday, to Be a Man" gathered and performed a minor miracle after about two months of preparation at the 7th Geoje National Choir Competition.
Led by Kollen Park, 43, the team achieved 5th place after passionately performing the songs "Nella Fantasia" and "Animation Medley" on the Geoje Art Center stage in South Gyeongsang Province on Sept. 3.
Credit for the achievement goes to the ardor of the choir. Also, Park's directing with patience, conviction, and devotion deserves high praise for playing a critical role. Without her charismatic lead, nothing would have been accomplished.
Park has a Korean mother and Lithuanian-American father and received her M.A. in Korean classical music composition from Seoul National University. As a professor of the musical department at Howon University and an artistic director belonging to Kick Musical Studio, she spends most of her time with music experts and professional musicians. For such a person, taking over an amateur choir and preparing them in about two months was a challenge.
However, she surprised everyone by successfully managing the complicated process including the auditions, selecting songs, and rehearsing the choirs' members. With her magic touch, the choir was practically ready in a little over a month.
At the last practice scene aired by KBS on Sept. 12, Park revealed what had been in her heart. "In the beginning, I doubted it," she said. Before wrapping up the final practice, she didn't forget to encourage the members nervously waiting for the competition within a week. "It doesn't matter whether you make a mistake in the competition. What should be counted is your serious participation until now. We already completed our priority goal in this mission."
About a week later, on the day of the competition, Park handed boxes to the members before their departure to Geoje. Each contained a partial written message. The messages were "On Thursday, 8 days before," "the choir competition for Sept. 3," "during the last practice session," "our mission was already completed," and "I love you all." There were also carrot muffins she baked in the boxes. If she had been a strict military leader throughout the preparation, at this moment she was a sweet and caring mother warmly hugging her children who are about to leave home on an adventure.
Becoming a celebrity through the project, Park showed up on the music program Music Storage on Sept. 8 and impressed audiences through performing duets.
The competition was aired on Sept. 19.
KBS 2TV "해피선데이" 남자의 자격 합창단은 3일 경남 거제시 거제문화예술회관에서 열린 제 7회 거제전국합창경연대회에 참가해 Nella fantasia 넬라 판타지아와 만화 주제가 메들리를 열창해 장려상을 수상하는 쾌거를 이뤘다.
이런 놀라운 결과를 낳은 데는 33명의 개개 팀원들의 헌신적인 노력도 있었지만 선방의 박칼린이 소신 있게 이끌어준 것이 큰 몫을 했다.
박칼린은 서울대학교 대학원에서 국악작곡학을 전공하였으며 현재 호원 대학교 뮤지컬과 교수이자 킥 뮤지컬 스튜디오에 소속되어있는 예술감독이다.
그 동안 많은 전문 뮤지컬 연기자들과 작업을 해온 박칼린에게 있어서 이번에 대회준비를 이끄는 과정은 쉽지 않은 모험 이였을 것이다. 맴버들을 추려내고 모든 것을 낯설어했던 합창단원들을 두 달 여간이라는 짧은 기간 동안 연습시켜 이러한 놀라운 결과를 만들어 내게 하기까지는 카리스마를 내뿜으며 팀이 흐트러지지 않게 다잡는 그녀의 리더다운 모습이 없었으면 불가능 했을 것이다.
12일에 방영된 대회 전 마지막 연습을 끝낸 후 "처음엔 될까 안될까 고민했다," 라고 말한 그녀의 솔직한 표현은 그간의 그녀의 속내가 어떠했을 지를 보여준다. 그 뒤 "대회에서 틀리든 말든 중요한 것이 아니다. 진지하게 했다는 것이 중요하다. 이미 우리는 미션을 이뤘다."라고 말을 이으며 보여준 그녀의 자신감은 대회를 앞두고 긴장했을 단원들에게 큰 용기가 되었을 것이다.
대회 당일 거제도로 향하기 전 그녀가 단원들에게 건넨 상자들 각각에는 '9월3일 합창대회', '8일 전 지난 목요일', '마지막 연습시간에', '이미 미션 완료', '사랑합니다' 라는 글과 함께 그녀가 손수 만든 당근 머핀들이 들어있었다. 거기에는 그녀가 그 동안 보여주었던 엄격하고 단단한 모습이 아닌 그녀의 또 다른 모습인 부드러움과 부끄러움만이 있었다.
이번의 대회참가로 다양한 모습을 보여주며 시청자들의 관심을 끌어온 박칼린은 9월 8일 밤 KBS 2TV '음악창고'에서 가수 및 배우들과 듀엣을 이루여 뛰어난 노래실력을 선보이며 진정한 카멜레온임을 증명했다.
