At the California auction of fellow Hollywood star Debbie Reynolds's costume collection, Monroe's ivory pleated Travilla dress, from the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch, undoubtedly stole the show, the Daily Mail said.
The dress, which sold Sunday at the Profiles in History auction house in Calabasas, California, is one of a selection of iconic film costumes and memorabilia collected by Reynolds over the years as Hollywood studios sold or emptied their warehouses.
Among other pieces up for auction, Monroe's red-sequin dress from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was also a clear favorite - selling for $1.2million, the newspaper said.

먼로는 영화에서 지하철이 지나가며 환풍구 바람에 치마가 치켜 올라가자 두 손으로 급히 내리 누르면서 늘씬한 다리와 허벅지를 드러내는 명장면을 연출했다.
이번 낙찰가는 의상 경매 사상 최고가다. 낙찰자는 먼로의 오랜 팬으로 알려졌는데 그는 수수료와 세금 등을 포함, 500만달러 이상을 지불해야 한다.
이번 경매에는 '7년 만의 외출' 외에 다른 할리우드 영화 소품 600여점이 출품됐는데 먼로의 최고가 낙찰을 위협한 것은 오드리 헵번(1929~93)이었다. 영화 '마이 페어 레이디'에서 그녀가 입고 나와 아카데미상까지 받은 옷도 370만달러(약 40억원)라는 고가에 팔렸다.
