The government will raise the annual enrollment 1) quota at medical schools by 2,000 starting in 2025 from the 2) current 3,058, Health Minister Cho Kyu-hong announced, Tuesday.

정부가 2) 현재 3,058명인 의과대학 1) 정원을 2025학년도에 2,000명 늘리기로 했다고 화요일 조규홍 보건복지부 장관이 밝혔다.

The ultimate goal is to ensure improved public access to medical services, particularly in rural areas, and to 3) alleviate 4) chronic 5) shortages of physicians in critical fields such as pediatrics and emergency care.

증원의 궁극적인 목표는 특히 지방에서 의료 서비스에 대한 접근성 향상을 보장하고 소아과나 응급의료와 같은 필수 분야의 4) 만성적인 의사 5) 부족 현상을 3) 완화하기 위한 것이다.

Despite strong opposition from doctors, the Ministry of Health and Welfare made the decision during a health care policy meeting presided over by Cho. The meeting was attended by government officials, healthcare experts, as well as 6) representatives of patients and consumers.

의사들의 강한 반발에도 불구하고 보건복지부는 조 장관이 주재한 보건의료정책심의위원회에서 이러한 결정을 내렸다. 이번 회의에는 정부 관계자, 보건 의료 전문가 뿐만 아니라 환자 및 소비자 6) 대표들도 참석했다.

In response to the government's decision, the Korea Medical Association (KMA), a doctors' organization, issued a warning of a general strike following the conclusion of the Lunar New Year holiday on Feb. 12.

정부의 결정에 대해 의사 단체인 대한의사협회는 설 연휴가 끝나는 2월 12일에 집단 시위를 벌이겠다는 경고를 발표했다.

"Today's decision will serve as a momentum for the country's medical reforms," the health minister said during the meeting. "Now is the golden time to revive essential treatment fields and prepare for an aging society."

위원회에서 조 장관은 "오늘 결정은 한국의 의료 개혁의 추진력으로 작용할 것"이라며 "지금이 고령화 사회를 준비하고 필수의료를 살리기 위한 골든타임"이라고 덧붙였다.

The total admissions quota of the 40 medical schools in Korea has remained unchanged at 3,058 since 2006.

한국 40곳의 의과대학 총 정원 수는 2006년 이후 3,058명으로 쭉 동결돼 왔다.
