The Seoul city government said Monday it will set up a joint memorial altar for the victims of this week's Jeju Air plane crash and minimize or cancel year-end events during the national mourning period.
The memorial altar will be set up in front of City Hall at 8 a.m. Tuesday and remain open until 10 p.m. Saturday, when the seven-day national mourning period ends, city officials said.
The annual bell-ringing ceremony at Bosingak Pavilion will be held as scheduled on New Year's Eve, but all performances and concerts for the event have been canceled.
A 30-meter-wide sun sculpture will rise behind the pavilion at the stroke of midnight to create an atmosphere of mourning for the victims of the plane crash.
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, Seoul Metropolitan Council chairperson Choi Ho-jung and civic representatives plan to be in attendance.
Other year-end events, including a media facade display on Gwanghwamun gate and a countdown event on Gwanghwamun Square, will be held without sound effects.
The ice skating rink at Seoul Plaza will also operate without music during the mourning period.
The city government said it has asked all district offices to cancel performances for their New Year sunrise events. (Yonhap)
