Sean, 52, rose to fame in the late 1990s as part of the rap duo Jinusean. After marrying actor Jung Hye-young in 2004, Sean gained more admiration as a devoted husband, father and philanthropist.
On Sunday, Sean fulfilled a 23-year dream by unveiling a nursing home designed specifically for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He introduced the facility, located in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, on his YouTube channel.
"This is the first care facility dedicated to ALS patients in Korea, and probably the world's first," Sean stated.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a terminal neurodegenerative disorder that impairs voluntary muscle movement, eventually leading to loss of mobility.
The nursing home features spacious rooms with large, low-set windows, a large treatment room, threshold-free doors and sizable gardens accessible even to bedridden patients.
Sean's journey for this project began with his late friend Park Seung-il, a former basketball player and ALS patient, whom he met in 2000. In 2011, Sean and Park co-founded an association to raise funds for the facility. Sean promoted numerous fundraising campaigns, including the famous Ice Bucket Challenge. Over 350,000 donors contributed to the project, which cost nearly 24 billion won ($16.2 million).
Celebrating the completion of the facility, Sean paid tribute to his late friend. "I wish you were here with me," he said. "But I'm sure you'd be just as happy as I am to see the facility ready."
The nursing home is set to open to patients in March.
