Morning temperatures in Seoul fell to minus 11.8 degree Celsius on Wednesday as frigid weather continues to grip the country, the state weather agency said.

The temperature fell to minus 11.1 degrees in Incheon, minus 10.5 degrees in Daejeon, minus 7.5 degrees in Gwangju, minus 6.8 degrees in Daegu and minus 5.6 degrees in Busan, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).

Mountainous regions recorded even lower temperatures, with Mount Seorak and Mount Deogyu's Seolcheon Peak seeing temperatures hover below minus 20 degrees at times.

The daily highs are expected to range from minus 7 degrees to plus 4 degrees, but most regions will see subzero temperatures throughout the day.

The arctic cold will continue for the time being, bolstered by strong winds with instantaneous speeds of over 55 kph, or 15 meters per second, the KMA said.

Snowfall is expected in the western coastal areas of South Chungcheong Province and the southwestern provinces of Jeolla through Thursday morning. The southern resort island of Jeju will also receive snow or rain until Thursday morning.

The KMA warned of heavy snowfall of 3 to 5 centimeters per hour in Jeolla and Jeju, and up to 3 cm per hour on the west coast of South Chungcheong.

Other regions, including the greater Seoul area and parts of Gangwon Province, are forecast to receive snow starting Thursday afternoon. (Yonhap)
