Popular actor Kim Sung-min was freed from jail Friday after receiving a suspended jail term for drug use.

The Seoul High Court sentenced him to 30 months in prison with the term suspended for four years for smuggling methamphetamine and using the drug as well as marijuana.

Kim was also ordered to pay 900,000 won in fines, take 40 hours of education on substance abuse and 120 hours of community service. He will also be under two years of probation.

"We usually impose heavy punishments on drug smugglers regardless of their social status, but we considered he brought the drugs to Korea not for the purpose of selling but for personal use. So we decided to give him a chance," the court said in its ruling.

Kim shed tears upon the court's decision.

"I know I was very wrong. I'm deeply repentent and I won't make the same mistake. Please give me another chance, if possible," he was quoted as saying at the courthouse by his lawyer.

The 38-year-old actor was indicted last December on charges of smoking marijuana, bringing methamphetamine from the Philippines between 2008 and 2010, and taking the drug on four occasions.

The lower court handed down a 30 month prison term in January. Admitting to all charges, he appealed for lenient punishment, submitting written reflections to the court several times.

His lawyer said Kim will not appeal. "His parents' illness turned worse after he was jailed. But they are now relieved."

Kim was released from the prison in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province, at noon.

배우 김성민이 집행유예를 받고 풀려났다. 서울고법은 김씨에게 필로폰을 밀수입, 투약하고 마리화나를 피운 혐의로 징역 2년 6개월에 집행유예 4년을 선고했다.

법원은 또 김씨에게 90여만의 추징금과 약물치료 40시간, 사회봉사활동 120시간, 2년의 보호관찰을 선고했다.

재판부는 "마약 밀수는 사회적 지위에 상관없이 엄중 처벌하고 있지만, 김씨가 마약을 판매 목적이 아니라 자신의 투약만을 위해 밀반입했다는 점을 고려해서 한 번 더 기회를 주기로 했다"고 밝혔다.

김씨는 판결을 듣고 눈물을 떨궜다. 김씨의 변호사는 김씨가 재판정에서 "제가 잘못했다는 것을 잘 알고 있습니다. 무척 후회하고 있고, 다시는 같은 실수를 저지르지 않을 것입니다. 가능하다면 제가 한번만 기회를 주십시오"라고 말했다고 전했다.

김씨는 작년 12월 마리화나를 피우고 2008년에서 2010년 사이 필리핀에서 필로폰을 들여와 투약한 혐의로 기소됐다. 1심 재판부는 2년 6개월의 실형을 선고했고, 김씨는 혐의를 인정하면서 재판부에 여러 번 반성문을 제출하는 등 선처를 호소했다.

김씨의 변호사는 김씨가 상고하지 않을 것이라며, "김씨가 구속된 후 김씨 부모님의 병세가 악화됐지만 지금은 회복중이다"라고 말했다.

김씨는 정오께 의왕의 구치소에서 풀려났다.
