As Netflix's apocalyptic horror series "Sweet Home" is set to conclude with its third season, its director Lee Eung-bok said Wednesday that the series will reach an epic finale as characters who parted ways in previous seasons reunite.

"I can say the third season is literally a comeback home. It feels like returning home. It's a story about friends, comrades and scattered characters encountering each other again," Lee said during a press conference in Seoul, introducing the series scheduled to be released on Netflix, Friday.

Based on Naver's webtoon of the same title, "Sweet Home" tells the story of residents in an apartment building displaying mysterious infection symptoms, fighting monsters and struggling to survive in a space cut off from the outside world.

The first season focused on Cha Hyun-soo (Song Kang) and his struggle with other survivors, while the second season dealt with more diverse stories unfolding in an expanded open space.

The "Sweet Home" series, praised for opening a new era among Korean-made creature or giant monster content, saw its first season topping Netflix charts in 13 countries within four days of its 2020 release and became the first Korean content to enter the streaming giant's top 10 chart in the United States.

The second season, released last year, remained on Netflix's global top 10 chart for two consecutive weeks and made it to the top 10 lists in 42 countries. But it received criticism for lacking the character relationships present in season 1.

Seemingly aware of this criticism, the director expressed hope that this final season would provide even greater entertainment to viewers, saying season 3 "brings back many things and I hope the excitement comes back too."

Actor Lee Jin-uk, who plays Pyeon Sang-wook, a former hitman and one of the main characters in the series, asked viewers to watch for the conclusion of the multi-faceted stories that have unfolded so far.

"The third season brings together all the events that have unfolded and reaches a conclusion. The differentiation is that the characters who have gone through various experiences in the first and second seasons undergo changes in their abilities and produce results," Lee said.

Lee Si-young, whose character Seo Yi-kyung gives birth to a child born as a monster and shows maternal love to protect that child, expressed her gratitude for being part of such a project.

"When we were filming the first season of 'Sweet Home', we shot for almost a year, which was the longest I had ever filmed for a project," she said. "It's an unforgettable and honorable experience in my life, having spent five years together."
