Opera singer Jo Sumi will perform during a Pope Francis mass in Daejeon next week, Universal Music said Wednesday.

Jo, one of Asia's most acclaimed sopranos in, will sing several tracks from her latest album during the Aug. 15 mass in the central city.

The day is Catholic Assumption Day, commemorating the Virgin Mary's death and her bodily assumption into heaven.

It is also Korean Liberation Day, marking the country's independence from Japanese colonial rule at the end of World War II.

"I have always admired Pope Francis for his humbleness and honesty, and I believe his message will provide help to the people struggling with many difficulties around the world," Jo said.

"I'm happy to be able to sing before the Pope and see him close-up together with many other Koreans."

The Pope is scheduled to visit Korea from Aug. 14-18 to celebrate an Asian Catholic youth event and for a ceremony to beatify 124 Korean Catholic martyrs.

"Only Bach," Jo's fourth solo album, was released in April on Deutsche Grammophon.
