Chung Yoo-ra, the daughter of President Park Geun-hye's confidant Choi Soon-sil, has passed the buck to her mother regarding all allegations against her in an influence-peddling scandal, after she was detained in Denmark.
Answering Korean journalists who attended her court hearing on her detention in Demark, she kept saying, "Mom did everything. I don't know anything."
It seemed she is distancing herself from key allegations against her _ she was granted admission to Ewha Womans University, one of the nation's top universities, and received good grades in classes which she did not attend, allegedly through her mother's influence over school officials. It is also alleged Samsung Group exclusively supported her dressage career by providing funds, raising suspicions that this was in return for business favors from the President through Choi.
However, previously, Chung was proud of having parents with influence and wealth. In a famous Facebook post dating to 2014, Chung said, "Blame your parents if you don't have competence instead of talking about my parents. Money is competence."
When this comment was made public last October, it angered many, especially young people who struggle and face enormous competition getting into universities and landing jobs. Her comment prompted students to organize protests on campuses and take to the streets in the anti-President candlelit protests.
Chung's "I don't know" comment from Denmark also angered many, drawing backlash from netizens.
"What you've enjoyed is thanks to your rich parents," one online user with the ID lj69** wrote.
Another with ID leec**** wrote, "It is a prime example of what goes around comes around. If you raise a child with illegitimate money and break rules, that's what you get."
A blogger named winc**** mocked her. "Not everyone can go to prison, Yoo-ra. That's a big merit, and you have your capable mother to thank. You should feel proud."
