A "hungry" homeless man has been arrested for allegedly stealing money from retailers' cash registers.

The man, surnamed Kim, 53, is suspected of having pocketed money from registers at convenience stores or restaurants in Busan between April and September when cashiers were distracted or absent. The money is estimated at 1.5 million won ($1,320), according to police.

Police started tracking him down in April after learning about his "habitual" stealing. But he evaded them as he travelled across the country, leaving no clues -- such as financial transactions -- that detectives could use to trace him.

He emerged on police radar in early September when police came across surveillance camera footage showing his location. He was then caught at a bar in Busan.

He reportedly told police his crime motive was "hunger."
