SK Telecom won two awards at the world renowned Information & Communication Technology (ICT) awards, Wednesday (KST).
At the TechXLR8 Awards, held at Gibson Hall in London, SKT was named the winner of the "Best Network Development of the Year Award" and "Best IoT (internet of things) Connectivity Solution."
Sponsored by the global ICT research institute Informa Telecoms & Media, the awards celebrated innovative technologies in seven tech fields including fifth-generation (5G) networks, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and IoT during the London Tech Week, a week-long convention for the latest technology and innovations.
Korea's biggest mobile carrier, SKT won the best network development award for its next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) network T Advanced Next Generation OSS (TANGO) and virtualized network management platform T-MANO.
TANGO is a big data analysis and machine learning-based AI network management system that spots and solves network problems and optimizes itself. The company has applied TANGO to its wired network in December 2016 and expanded the system to its wireless network last October.
SKT said the AI-assisted network operating platform can be applied to 5G networks and IoT services. SKT signed an agreement last September to provide the TANGO platform to Bharti Airtel, India's largest telecommunications services provider.
SKT also developed T-MANO, a virtualized network equipment and software management platform and applied it to its commercial long-term evolution (LTE) network last July. T-MANO will also be applied to 5G networks, the company said.
The company won the best IoT connectivity solution award with its IoT hybrid network.
After being recognized, Park Jong-kwan, senior vice president and head of the company's ICT R&D center, said the two awards "prove our efforts to advance 5G and IoT network technology, which were recognized globally."
Park added, "We will continue to upgrade our technology to lead the upcoming 5G era."
Meanwhile, KT also won three awards -- the "Best 5G Core Network Technology," the "Best IoT Deployment" and the "Blockchain Innovator of the Year" -- at the 5G World Summit in London, the same day.
