A group of Russian senators visiting Pyongyang met with North Korean officials to discuss economic cooperation between the two countries, Russia's news agency reported.

Oleg Melnichenko, who heads the delegation, said they had a meeting with a vice ministerial-level official from the North's Ministry of External Economic Relations on Tuesday, according to the TASS news agency.

During the meeting, they discussed economic cooperation projects that could be proceeded without violating U.N. sanctions imposed on North Korea, such as building a bridge to connect the two countries across the Tumen River on the North's east coast, the senator was quoted as saying.

They also discussed possible cooperation between North Korea and Russia's provincial governments, the report said.

The Russian delegation arrived in North Korea on Saturday for a six-day visit to mark the 70th anniversary of an agreement signed between the two countries on economic and cultural cooperation.

The trip took place as Pyongyang has been stepping up its diplomacy with Russia since the collapse of the summit between leader Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump last month.

Last week, North Korea and Russia signed an agreement to strengthen "high-level contact" and intensify cooperation on the economy. (Yonhap)
