Hyundai Mobis will open a hydrogen refueling station in Chungju to the public free of charge, a first step towards making the North Chungcheong Provincial city a "hydrogen-powered city," the auto parts manufacturing arm of Hyundai Motor Group said Thursday.

The company said it signed an agreement with Chungju city government to allow hydrogen fuel cell vehicle drivers to charge their vehicles at the refueling station inside its plant through the end of 2019.

The company completed construction of the hydrogen refueling station located at its car component manufacturing plant in May and recently received an operating license from the government.

"The agreement is to increase the number of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and expand the company's eco-friendly business," the company said.

To use the company's hydrogen refueling station, drivers are required to make an online reservation via its website at visit.mobis.co.kr. The operating hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Hyundai Mobis also hosted a junior engineer class at an elementary school in the city, the same day. The company said it planned the event to teach young students how hydrogen fuel cell vehicles work.
