An owner of a Chihuahua, who wants to be identified only as Kwon, is busy nowadays searching for accommodation for an upcoming family trip.
치와와를 키우는 권 씨는 요즘 다가오는 가족 여행을 위해 숙소를 검색하느라 바쁘다.
However, unlike a few years ago when her family first traveled with their dog, she is finding planning the vacation far easier as there are a growing number of facilities ― even some hotels ― that are welcoming "canine guests."
가족들이 처음으로 개와 함께 여행을 떠났던 몇 년 전과는 달리, 여러 호텔을 비롯한 많은 숙박시설들이 ‘개 손님'을 환영하고 있었고, 권 씨는 휴가 계획을 짜기가 훨씬 더 쉬워졌음을 알게 됐다.
"There are a lot of pet-friendly facilities now, and because having a pet is so common nowadays, more hotels allow people's animal companions to join them on their travels," she said.
"요즘은 애완견 기르는 것이 매우 흔한 만큼, 애완동물에 친화적인 시설들이 많다. 많은 호텔들이 애완동물들이 가족과 함께 여행할 수 있게 허용하고 있다"고 그녀는 말했다.
As Kwon's case shows, the rapid growth of the local pet population is making the domestic lodging and travel industries more pet-friendly.
권 씨의 사례에서 알 수 있듯이, 국내 애견인구의 급속한 성장은 국내 숙박 및 여행 산업을 애완동물 친화적으로 만들고 있다.
According to accommodation booking app Good Choice, Tuesday, there are more than 700 properties accepting pets across the country.
숙박예약 앱 ‘여기어때'에 따르면, 화요일 기준으로 애완동물의 숙박을 허용하는 업체 수는 전국적으로 700개가 넘는다.
The app added the number is a sharp increase compared with 70 in 2016.
이는 2016년 70개에 비해 많이 늘어난 수치라고 ‘여기어때'는 덧붙였다.
By type, vacation houses accounted for 81.5 percent, followed by guesthouses at 9.5 percent, glamping (luxury camping) sites at 5 percent and hotels, 4 percent.
숙소 유형별로는 펜션(81.5%)이 가장 많았고, 게스트하우스(9.5%), 글램핑(5%), 호텔(4%) 순으로 뒤를 이었다.
Another survey by travel booking site Expedia that interviewed 300 people in their 20s and 30s found that 56.7 percent of them had traveled with their pets and 66.4 percent of those who had such experiences said they would miss their pets if they did not bring them along.

"More facilities for pet owners such as pool villas and swimming pools are coming, so now I think we have a better environment to travel with pets," said Kang Soo-yeon, who has a dog. "Now we even have pet taxis, allowing us to travel more easily."
반려견을 키우는 강수연 씨는 "풀빌라, 수영장 등 반려인을 위한 시설이 많아지고 있어 이제는 반려동물과 함께 여행하기 좋은 환경인 것 같다"며 "이제는 반려동물을 위한 택시까지 있어 더 쉽게 여행할 수 있게 되었다"고 말했다.
With the addition of pet travel, the local industry is forecast to be valued at 6 trillion won by 2027, according to a 2018 report by KB Financial Group.
반려동물과 함께 여행하는 사람들이 늘어남에 따라, 국내 여행산업은 2027년 6조원 규모가 될 것이라고 KB금융그룹은 보고서를 통해 밝혔다.
Given the situation, some local hotels are quickly stepping up efforts to become pet-friendly properties, filling their rooms with various amenities for pets such as bedding, towels and treats as well as toys and dog poo bags.
이런 상황을 고려해 국내의 일부 호텔들은 반려견 전용 침구, 수건, 간식뿐 아니라 장난감, 개똥 가방 등 다양한 비품들로 방을 채우며 반려동물에 친화적인 숙박시설로 빠르게 발돋움하고 있다.
"We offer the entire 14 rooms on the ninth floor as pet rooms," an official of the Seoul-based L'Escape Hotel said, adding it also runs a Pet Zone allowing owners and pets to dine together.
서울에 있는 ‘레스케이프 호텔'의 한 관계자는 "9층의 14개 객실 전부를 반려견 전용 객실로 제공하고 있다"고 말하며 "주인과 애완동물이 함께 식사할 수 있는 ‘펫존'도 운영하고 있다"고 덧붙였다.
The Grand Mercure Ambassador Seoul Yongsan and the Sheraton Seoul Palace Gangnam are also offering pet-friendly accommodation and amenities.
‘그랜드 머큐어 앰배서더 서울 용산'과 ‘쉐라톤 서울 팔래스 강남'도 애완동물 친화적인 숙박시설과 편의시설을 제공하고 있다.
The local travel industry is also focused on catering to travelers with pets. Mode Tour launched a package program earlier this month that features a ferry trip from Wando, South Jeolla Province, to Jeju Island and pet-friendly services involving vacation houses, cafeterias and rental cars.
국내 여행업계도 반려동물을 키우는 여행자들의 구미를 맞추고 있다. 모두투어는 이달 초 전남 완도에서 제주도로 가는 여객선 여행, 휴가용 집, 식당, 렌터카 등이 포함된 애완동물 친화적인 서비스를 제공하는 패키지 프로그램을 시작했다.
"We are receiving positive responses from customers. With the increasing consumer power of pet owners, more pet-focused tour programs are expected to come," a Mode Tour official said.
모두투어의 한 관계자는 "고객들로부터 좋은 반응을 얻고 있다. 반려동물과 반려인의 영향력이 커지는 만큼, 더 많은 관련 여행 상품들이 이어질 것으로 예상한다"고 말했다.
Korean Air operates its SkyPets program for those who register their pets on the website. Those passengers can collect stamps each time they travel with their pet, which can be used to receive free or discounted travel with their pets later.
대한항공은 홈페이지에 반려견을 등록하는 사람들을 위한 ‘스카이펫' 프로그램을 운영하고 있다. 승객들은 반려견과 함께 여행할 때마다 우표를 수집할 수 있는데, 이 우표는 나중에 반려견과 함께 여행시 할인을 받는 데 사용될 수 있다.
Asiana Airlines has also increased its weight limit for pets that can be brought into the cabin from 5 kilograms to 7 kilograms last year.
아시아나항공도 지난해 기내에 반입할 수 있는 반려동물의 무게 제한을 5kg에서 7kg으로 늘렸다.
