Warsaw (DPA) ― German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has asked the Polish people for forgiveness for the atrocities their country suffered during World War II, in a speech to mark the ill-fated Warsaw Uprising 75 years ago.
하이코 마스 독일 외무장관이 불행하게 끝난 '바르샤바 봉기' 75주년을 기념하는 연설에서 폴란드 국민들에게 2차 세계대전 중 독일이 끼친 만행에 대해 용서를 구했다.
"I came here because I honor the dead and the families of the dead and wounded, because I want to ask the Polish people for forgiveness," Maas said in Warsaw.
마스 외무장관은 바르샤바에서 "사망자와 유가족들을 기리고 폴란드 국민에게 용서를 구하기 위해 이곳에 왔다"고 말했다.
"I am ashamed of what was done to your country by Germans and in the German name."
"독일인과 독일의 이름으로 폴란드에서 저지른 일이 부끄럽다."
Germany bears responsibility for this horror, Maas added, and spoke of his shame that the Nazis' brutal quelling of the insurrection "was concealed for too long after the war."
마스 외무장관은 독일이 이 끔찍한 일에 책임을 지고 있다며 나치의 잔혹한 진압이 "전쟁 후에도 오랫동안 감춰졌다"는 수치심을 토로했다.
Germany wants to better commemorate Polish victims and raise awareness of the Warsaw Uprising, Maas said, pointing to the recently reopened exhibition about the Warsaw Uprising in Berlin's Topography of Terror museum.
그는 "독일이 폴란드인 희생자들을 더 잘 추모하고 바르샤바 봉기에 대한 인식을 높이길 바란다"고 말하며 최근 베를린에 있는 '테러의 토포그래피' 박물관에서 다시 열린 바르샤바 봉기에 대한 전시회를 언급했다.
The minister also voiced support for creating a memorial site in Berlin for the Polish victims of World War II and the occupation of Poland.

"The common European identity will only be complete when we bring together our various historical memories and experiences, when it also includes and depicts Polish ideas and Polish memory," Maas said.
