Memory chip maker SK hynix is strengthening technical cooperation with U.S.-based microprocessor maker AMD, the company said Thursday.

It said it has worked closely with AMD to provide memory chip products such as DRAM and SSD fully compatible with AMD's second-generation EPYC 7002 Series processors, unveiled at an event in San Francisco on Wednesday.

AMD, the world's second-largest server and PC microprocessor maker, said its second-generation EPYCs are server processors that will be used for data centers that require high performance. Global tech giants such as Google, Twitter and Microsoft have announced they will adopt the new processors.

"SK hynix DDR4 DRAM supports the maximum speed of 3,200 megabits per second of the second-generation EPYC processors, which will increase memory performance more than 20 percent compared to the first-generation EPYC processors," the Korean chip maker said.

Scott Aylor, corporate vice president and general manager of AMD's data center solutions group, said: "We're excited and thankful to have our partners like SK hynix supporting the launch of AMD EPYC 7002 Series processors.

"Their EPYC-based solutions are poised to deliver a new standard for modern data center customers. With twice the cores, breakthrough performance and embedded security features, all delivered by a leadership architecture, customers can transform their data center operations at the pace of their business."

SK hynix said the growing partnership between the two companies will help the Korean company cement its status as a leading memory chip maker.

"The latest partnership with AMD will reinforce SK hynix's strength in the memory solution industry and further promote the company as a total memory semiconductor company providing data center-oriented DRAM and SSD solutions optimized for system requirements," Lee Jae-hyeong, head of product planning and enabling at the company, said.
