Samsung Electronics had a nearly 18 percent share of the global gaming monitor market in the first half of 2019, becoming a top seller in the lucrative high-priced monitor category, according to data by an industry tracker, Wednesday.

Market researcher IDC said Samsung accounted for 17.9 percent of the global gaming monitor market in the first six months of this year, up 5 percentage points from the same period in 2018, followed by Acer and Dell.

Gaming monitors have a refresh rate of 100 hertz or higher. A high refresh rate decreases signal latency and enables users to enjoy a smoother game playing experience. It took four years for Samsung, which rolled out its first gaming monitor in 2016, to take first place.

While the global PC market has struggled with sluggish growth, the gaming monitor market has seen swift growth thanks to the growing popularity of online games that require high-quality hardware, and device manufacturers have been focusing on gaming monitors in order to seek a breakthrough.

The IDC said the market volume for gaming monitors was at around 5 million sales in 2018 and forecasted the figure will exceed 10 million by 2023.

"We were able to become the top seller in the gaming monitor category as our products offer an immersive experience to users," a Samsung official said. The company said its CRG5 monitor, which has a refresh rate of 240 hertz, has become a popular item among gamers due to its wide viewing angles.
