South Korean football star Yoo Sang-chul, 48, who as a midfielder contributed to the nation's historic advance to a semi-final in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, is suffering stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
2002년 한일 월드컵에서 미드필더로 활약하며 한국의 역사적인 4강 진출에 이바지한 축구 스타 유상철(48)이 췌장암 4기로 투병 중이다.
Yoo, head coach of professional football club Incheon United, revealed his situation in a statement on Tuesday, amid growing rumors of his health problem.
프로축구 K리그1 인천 유나이티드의 유상철 감독의 건강 이상설이 나돌던 가운데, 유 감독은 화요일 성명을 통해 자신의 상태를 밝혔다.
"I've been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer," he wrote in the statement posted on the club's website. "I had jaundice and abnormalities in the body in mid-October. Shortly afterward I underwent a thorough health checkup and got diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer."
그는 구단 웹사이트를 통해 "췌장암 4기 진단을 받았다"고 밝혔다. 이어 "지난 10월 중순경 몸에 황달 증상이 나타나는 등 이상 징후가 발생하였고, 곧바로 병원을 찾아 정밀 검사를 받았다. 그리고 검사 결과 췌장암 4기라는 진단을 받게 되었다"고 말했다.
Stage 4 means the cancer has metastasized from the pancreas to other organs (usually the liver, abdominal wall, lungs, bones or the lymph nodes), according to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's website. Intensive chemotherapy is necessary to keep the cancer from spreading.
췌장암 액션네트워크(Pancreatic Cancer Action Network)의 웹사이트에 따르면 췌장암 4기는 암이 췌장에서 다른 장기(일반적으로 간, 복벽, 폐, 뼈 또는 림프절)로 전이된 것을 의미한다. 암이 더 퍼지지 않게 하려면 집중적인 항암치료가 필요하다.
Yoo said he had received the first round of treatment and returned to the team to keep a promise to players and fans ― saving the team from falling to the second-division league.
유 감독은 인천 유나이티드의 2부리그 강등을 막겠다는 선수단 및 팬들과의 약속을 지키기 위해, 1차 항암치료를 마치고 구단에 복귀했다고 전했다.
Incheon United ranks 10th in K-League's first-division, with six wins, 12 draws and 18 losses. The team's fate hinges on its two remaining matches (Nov. 24 and 30).
인천 유나이티드는 K리그 1에서 6승 12무 18패로 10위에 올라 있다. 인천의 운명은 남은 두 경기(24일, 30일)에 달려 있다.
"I will do my best to keep the team in the first division," Yoo said. "I will never give up saving my team just as our supporters do. I will also never give up fighting the cancer and end up prevailing."
유 감독은 "인천의 올 시즌 K리그1 잔류를 위해 최선을 다하겠다"라고 말하며 "팬 여러분께서 끝까지 우리 인천을 믿고 응원해주시듯이 저 또한 끝까지 포기하지 않고 버티고 또 버티겠다. 병마와도 싸워 이겨낼 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
In a show of respect for Yoo's will, the team has decided to keep him in the coaching post until the end of the season.
