Singer-turned-actor plays straightforward boss in workplace romance

Actor Yoon Kye-sang, who made a strong impression with action films like "The Outlaws" (2017), has taken on a romantic comedy, playing the lead in the Disney+ series "Kiss Sixth Sense," for the first time since 2015's "A Dramatic Night."

"The biggest emotion a person can have is love. I really like the feeling of melodrama. It can turn a person into a fool or into a hero, so I like romance," the actor said in an interview with The Korea Times at a cafe in downtown Seoul, Thursday.

"My agency recommended me the script (for this series) saying, 'you can show your attractive side with this piece.' So I read it and it was really sweet. I felt that someone more handsome and younger should play the character but they offered me the role. I hesitated for a moment but I felt this could be my last chance (to do a rom-com) … I wanted to take the challenge."

Based on the ongoing webcomic of the same name, the 12-part series follows a romance between two coworkers at an advertising agency ― Hong Ye-sul (Seo Ji-hye) and her hypersensitive boss Cha Min-hu (Yoon).

Ye-sul has a special ability to see another person's future when she kisses them. One day, she accidentally kisses Min-hu and sees a very unlikely future of them together in bed, which leads them to develop their professional relationship into a romantic one.

The series is led by director Nam Ki-hoon, whose previous works include the 2018 rom-com series "The Beauty Inside," and is scripted by Jeon Yu-ri, who wrote the 2018 romance series "Radio Romance."

Yoon's character Min-hu is a top-tier advertising specialist in the industry and is straightforward with his feelings.

"I think Min-hu's straightforwardness is what many people have these days. He is honest about his feelings and if he likes a woman, he lets her know. I also like my true self right now and tell myself to stay honest. There's nothing more charming than being honest," he said, adding he shares a resemblance with the character as he too is straightforward, especially in love.

Yoon got married last August and finally held a belated wedding ceremony this month due to the COVID-19 situation. He expressed he has been experiencing blissful days since getting married, saying "I've become happier."

The actor, who started as a member of the K-pop group g.o.d, shared his love for acting.

"I've become more ambitious recently. I really want to become a good actor and keep acting until I die," he said. "I feel that acting gets harder the more you do it. In the past, I didn't know much about acting so I could focus on what I do well, whereas now I have more knowledge (about acting) so it feels harder … so my perspective on acting changes from time to time."

The last two episodes of "Kiss Sixth Sense" are set for release on Disney+ on Wednesday.
