Grand plan needed to catch up with leaders
시장 선도자를 따라잡을 수 있는 공격적 대책 필요해South Korea's artificial intelligence (AI) industry lags far behind major countries such as the United States and China. Tortoise Intelligence, a data analysis institute based in the United Kingdom, recently came out with its "Global AI Index," subjecting 62 countries around the globe to certain key criteria.
한국의 인공지능(AI) 산업이 미국이나 중국과 같은 주요국에 비해 뒤쳐져 있다. 영국에 기반한 데이터 분석기관 토터스인텔리전스는 최근 전세계 62개국에 핵심 기준을 적용한 ‘글로벌 AI 지수'를 발표했다.The survey showed that Korea ranked sixth with 40.3 points while the U.S. topped the list with 100 points followed by China with 61.5 points. Singapore and the U.K. outranked Korea with 49.7 and 41.8 points, respectively.
설문조사에 따르면 한국은 40.3점으로 6위, 미국은 100점으로 1위, 중국은 61.5점으로 2위를 차지했다. 싱가포르와 영국은 각각 49.7점과 41.8점을 받아 한국을 제쳤다.Of the seven major categories, Korea got a relatively high score in terms of innovation, possessing the largest number of patents after the U.S. and China. Yet, it received poor scores in the categories of talent and investments, ranking 12th and 18th, respectively.
총 7개 평가부문 중 한국은 미국과 중국 다음으로 많은 특허건수를 보유해 ‘혁신' 지표에서 상대적으로 높은 점수를 얻었다. 하지만 ‘인재'와 ‘민간투자' 지표에서는 낮은 점수를 받아 각각 12위, 18위를 차지했다.Korea had only six AI-related listed firms, compared to 172 in the U.S. and 161 in China. Japan had 26 while Taiwan had nine. Regarding cumulative investments during 2013-2022, Korea registered only $5.5 billion, far behind the U.S.' $248.9, China's $95.1 billion and the U.K.'s $18.2 billion.
한국의 A관련 기업 수는 6개인 반면, 미국은 172개, 중국은 161개였다. 일본은 26개, 대만은 9개다. 2013~2022년 누적 민간투자 규모도 한국은 단 55억달러로 미국의 2489억달러, 중국의 951억달러, 영국의 182억달러에 뒤쳐졌다.The growth prospect of the global generative AI market is very bright. Bloomberg forecasts the global AI market will expand to 1,600 trillion won ($1.18 trillion) by 2032. Goldman Sachs even foresees generative AI helping boost global GDP by more than 7 percent.
새계 생성형 AI 시장의 성장 전망은 매우 밝다. 블룸버그는 글로벌 AI 시장이 2032년까지 1600조원(1조1800억 달러) 규모까지 확장될 거라고 예측했다. 골드만삭스는 생성형 AI가 세계 GDP를 7% 이상 증가시킬 거라고 보고 있다.Rep. Yang Hyang-ja cited the need for full-fledged support for domestic IT enterprises that are mostly struggling to sharpen their industrial competitiveness. They include Naver and Kakao which launched AI companies such as HyperCLOVA X and KoGPT 2.0, respectively.
한국의희망 양향자 의원은 산업 경쟁력을 향상시키기 위해 고군분투하는 국내 IT기업을 위한 적극적인 지원의 필요성을 언급했다. 국내 IT기업에는 각각 하이퍼클로바X와 KoGPT 2.0를 출시한 AI 기업 네이버와 카카오가 있다.
