Financial authorities in Korea announced on Sunday a complete ban on short selling from Monday until the end of June next year.
일요일 금융당국은 월요일부터 내년 6월까지 공매도를 전면 금지하기로 했다고 발표했다.
The temporary ban was announced after financial authorities discovered rampant illegal short selling practices by global investment banks.
이번 한시적 금지는 금융당국이 글로벌 투자은행의 관행화된 불법 무차입 공매도 사례를 적발한 후 발표됐다.
The Financial Services Commission (FSC), the country's top financial regulator, said the ban will be applied to all listed stocks on the main KOSPI, as well as Kosdaq and KONEX markets from Monday.
주요 금융규제기관인 금융위원회는 월요일부터 코스피뿐만 아니라 코스닥, 코넥스 시장에 상장된 전 종목에 공매도 금지가 적용된다고 밝혔다.
So far, the ban on short selling has been partial, allowing the shorting of major stocks included in the KOSPI 200 index and Kosdaq 150 index as exceptions.
지금까지 공매도 금지는 부분적으로 적용돼 코스피 200이나 코스닥 150 편입 종목만 예외적으로 공매도가 허용됐다.
The FSC cited rampant illegal short selling in the local stock market as the reason behind the move, saying the practice has undermined market trust and hampered the formation of fair prices.
금융위원회는 이번 조치의 이유로 국내 주식시장에 만연한 불법 공매도를 들며, 이 관행은 시장 신뢰를 저하시키고 공정한 가격형성을 저해한다고 밝혔다.
"Despite previous regulatory improvements, concerns remain high over fair price formation in the domestic stock market due to repeated illegal naked short selling by global institutional investors in the Korean stock market," FSC Chairman Kim Joo-hyun said during a press briefing on Sunday.
일요일 언론 브리핑에서 김주현 금융위원장은 "이전 규제 향상에도 불구하고 국내 주식 시장에서글로벌 투자은행들의 반복적인 불법 무차입 공매도 행위 때문에 시장의 공정한 가격형성이 저해된다는 우려가 높다"고 말했다.
