President Yoon Suk Yeol took part in an after-school program for first grade students Friday, a fulfillment of a promise to volunteer his services for the operation of a new state-backed child care initiative.

Yoon visited Ain Elementary School in Hwaseong, 45 kilometers south of Seoul, to serve as a special instructor during Neulbom School, an integrated program of before- and after-school child care and education that launched at more than 2,000 elementary schools this month.

During the class, he and the children watched a video of last year's launch of South Korea's domestically developed Nuri space rocket.

The president also read them a book on space and rockets, helped the children fly Nuri rocket models and explained in easy terms how a rocket is launched.

Yoon later met with school staff to discuss their experiences running Neulbom School over the past four weeks and exchanged views on how to make the program a success.

"The president said once a state child care system is established around Neulbom School, children will be able to play and study freely, nurture their imagination and creativity, and grow healthily," the presidential office said in a press release. (Yonhap)
