A total of 34 young Koreans will be dispatched to 13 developing countries under the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) program, a global development initiative mediated by the Export-Import Bank (Eximbank) of Korea, the state-run lender said Thursday.

The 13 countries are Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Mongolia, Laos, India, Uzbekistan, Tanzania, Ghana and Colombia.

The EDCF is an economic aid established by the Korean government in 1987, dedicated to advancing the growth of developing countries with infrastructure building. The broader objective is to foster industrial development and economic stability. The fund provides long-term low-interest loans.

The undergraduates and graduates in master's or doctoral programs will undergo training in the six-month Eximbank-arranged overseas internship to become overseas development assistance (ODA) specialists.

The lender organized the overseas internship program in 2010, and two dozen Koreans have participated in the internship every year since.

The young experts will sit in meetings of government bodies and global organizations and assist in on-site inspections of EDCF projects.

They will help review the status quo of each country's economy and ODA progress.

The EDCF program, the lender said, provides an opportunity for participants to build on the experience to seek careers on the global stage.

"We expect many young Koreans whose interests reach beyond public development assistance to become global experts, as nurtured by the program's global capacity building experience," the lender said.
