Over nine out of 10 Korean adults believe married couples should pool their assets, a Kakao Pay survey released Tuesday found.

In the survey of 42,435 men and women between April 15 and 18, 45 percent of the respondents said it is better for couples to pool their entire assets.

About 45.7 percent said only partial pooling should suffice. Some 7 percent said couples don't need to combine finances at all.

More than half of people aged 60 and older said the assets should be shared. About 47 percent of the 50-59 age group agreed, with half of the 20 to 39-year-olds giving the same response.

Men opposing asset sharing outnumbered women. About 9 percent of men said couples don't need to merge assets, whereas only 5.5 percent of women said so.

"Most of the [Kakao Pay] users agree to the idea of couples pooling their assets," the payment subsidiary of Kakao Corp. said. "We will provide better services to best meet the needs of couples seeking to augment income and investment returns."

Meanwhile, Statistics Korea data in March showed the number of marriages came to 20,008 in January, up 11.6 percent from a year earlier. It was the fourth straight month of increase since October last year.

The number of divorces in the same period came to 7,940, up 9.5 percent.

Nearly two out of 1,000 people filed for divorce last year.

The age when they filed for divorce averaged 49.9 for men and 46.6 for women.

The marriages lasted for an average of 16.8 years, down 0.2 years from a year earlier.
