A man in his 40s has been arrested on charges of making nearly 100 hoax calls to police over the past year, police said Wednesday.

According to the Ulsan Jungbu Police Station, an arrest warrant was issued by a court for the suspect, who now faces charges of obstruction of justice after having made 95 false reports to police since May 2023.

In one case, he falsely reported that his father's life was at risk; in another one, he lied that he was being assaulted by his girlfriend.

The man had been warned by police repeatedly about the hoax calls, yet he continued to make them.

According to police, he said he did so as "revenge" after being grilled by police over the alleged assault of a police officer responding to a complaint against the man last year over a commotion caused by an argument with his girlfriend.

Police said they will continue to respond to false reports sternly.

A revised law to strengthen penalties for such offenses will come into force on July 3 after being approved by the National Assembly in December 2023. Under the law, violators could face a fine of up to 5 million won ($3,700) for false reports to police.
