Prosecutors summoned the chief of the Army Special Warfare Command on Monday over his involvement in last week's botched martial law declaration.

Lt. Gen. Kwak Jong-keun was summoned to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office to be questioned as a witness in the possible treason and abuse of power charges.

"I again send out words of sincere apology to the people," the commander said upon appearing before the prosecution.

Earlier, Kwak told opposition lawmakers that he received orders from the then defense minister to pull the people inside the National Assembly building outside.

The commander claimed he received orders from former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun over the telephone to secure the facilities of the National Assembly, the National Election Commission and Flower Research, an opinion poll company. (Yonhap)
