Foreign chambers of commerce joined Korean business associations in offering condolences to the victims of the Jeju Air plane crash at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province.
Expressing their support for the bereaved families, foreign business lobby groups shared images of white chrysanthemums on their social media. In Korea, these flowers symbolize grief and are typically used in funeral ceremonies.
A day after the worst-ever aviation accident on Korean soil claimed 179 lives on Sunday, the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) wrote on social media that it extends its heartfelt condolences to the victims' families, friends and everyone affected by the unimaginable loss.
"We hope to support the recovery and healing process in any way we can," the largest foreign chamber of commerce in Korea said.
AMCHAM Chairman James Kim also extended his sympathies to the victims' families and the entire Korean community in a separate social media post.
"Our thoughts are with all those grieving and we stand united with South Korea during this incredibly difficult time," he said.
The Korean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry also said on Monday that it would join the nation in extending heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families, in line with acting President Choi Sang-mok's declaration of a weeklong national mourning period.
"During this time of grief, we stand in solidarity with the people of Korea, offering our support and sympathy," the second-largest foreign chamber of commerce in Korea said.
