Acting President Choi Sang-mok directed the government on Thursday to expedite the provision of emergency living expenses to the families of victims of the tragic plane crash that claimed 179 lives.

Choi's order comes after the Jeju Air plane, carrying 181 people, belly-landed and exploded at an airport in the country's southwestern county of Muan on Sunday, leaving only two survivors.

Since the accident, the government has implemented various support measures for the bereaved families, such as reimbursing individuals who have taken personal leave from work to recover the bodies of their loved ones.

In this effort, the government also plans to assist local governments in swiftly disbursing emergency living expenses to families facing financial difficulties during the recovery process.

"We will continue to support the bereaved families even after the funeral procedures are completed and will spare no effort to provide the necessary aid," Choi said during a disaster control meeting in Seoul.

Additionally, the government announced that the families can now access consultations on deferring tax payments, including local tax reductions. (Yonhap)
