Prosecutors on Thursday were questioning National Security Adviser Shin Won-sik as part of their investigation into the short-lived imposition of martial law last month, officials said.

The prosecution's special investigation team handling the case called in Shin earlier in the day to question him as a witness over President Yoon Suk Yeol's botched martial law declaration on Dec. 3.

Shin is expected to be questioned about the promotions of military commanders, allegedly involved during the hourslong martial law incident, when he served as defense minister before taking his current role at the presidential office.

The officials include Lt. Gen. Yeo In-hyung, head of the Defense Counterintelligence Command, Lt. Gen. Kwak Jong-keun, chief of the Army Special Warfare Command, and Lt. Gen. Lee Jin-woo, commander of the Capital Defense Command.

Prosecutors will also likely question Shin on whether Yoon and former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun spoke to him about martial law, considering claims that Shin was aware of the martial law plan since March last year and that he tried to dissuade it. (Yonhap)
