The Constitutional Court on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to conducting fair trials, saying that it will never be influenced by public opinion campaigns surrounding President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment trial.

The court's spokesperson Cheon Jae-hyun made the remarks amid accusations from the impeached president's legal representatives over possible unfairness in the proceedings of Yoon's impeachment trial.

"As an independent tribunal, the Constitutional Court will never be shaken by public opinion campaigns outside the court and is conducting fair trials," Cheon said in a briefing.

Cheon rejected accusations from Yoon's lawyers that his impeachment trial is proceeding at an unusually fast pace compared to past presidential impeachment trials.

She also dismissed claims of the court quickly scheduling dates for other impeachment trials over that of Yoon's due to pressure from the ruling bloc, describing them as being "clearly contrary to the facts."

Meanwhile, the court said it is currently reviewing a request from Yoon's lawyers for an injunction to suspend a warrant to detain the impeached president.

The Seoul Western District Court granted an extension of the warrant on Tuesday after investigators failed to execute the initial warrant and it expired the previous day. (Yonhap)
