World's 1st rollable laptop grabs attention

LAS VEGAS – Samsung Display showcased its expertise in developing various display form factors at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, unveiling, Wednesday (local time), a laptop with a rollable screen and a micro LED for smartwatches.

During a media tour of its private booth for corporate clients, the company showcased its foldable, rollable, and stretchable displays featured in various devices, including the Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 6, the world's first laptop featuring a rollable display.

The laptop, set to be released in June, became one of the most-talked-about gadgets at this year's CES after being unveiled by Lenovo the day before. Featuring Samsung Display's rollable OLED panel, the laptop has a 14-inch screen with a 5:4 aspect ratio when rolled in, but extends to a 16.7-inch screen with an 8:9 aspect ratio when unrolled.

It takes approximately 8 seconds to fully unroll, and the screen appears to be about 150% the size of its base when extended. Once unrolled, users can stack two different apps vertically, similar to using dual monitors.

For this panel, Samsung Display said it not only applied its rollable technology but also Eco Square OLED technology, a first for laptop displays. This technology integrates the polarizer, or light-filtering layer, into the panel using on-cell film technology, resulting in a 30 percent improvement in power efficiency and a slimmer design.

Also at the booth, Samsung Display showcased the first micro LED display for smartwatches. The display features a 2.1-inch rectangular panel, created by transferring approximately 700,000 LED chips in red, green, and blue. This design achieves a maximum resolution of 326 pixels per inch and a brightness of 4,000 nits, setting a new industry benchmark.

By using on-cell film technology and a polyimide substrate, the company said the display offers improved power efficiency and greater design flexibility in form factors.

Micro LED displays are regarded as a next-generation display technology, as each LED chip functions as a pixel without the need for an external backlight. This results in higher brightness, enhanced reliability, and lower power consumption, making it a preferred solution for future displays.

At the booth, the company also showcased its stretchable display, which expands from the center to form a bulge before returning to its flat state. This represents an upgrade of the company's first swelling stretchable display, which was revealed in 2017.

Also showcased at the booth was a laptop equipped with a glass-free 3D display, an ultra-thin display that can be mounted on a wall, and a range of world-first innovations, including the 500 Hz QD-OLED monitor.

"Samsung Display was able to ensure durability based on its extensive experience in foldable production," an official at the company said. "These various new display technologies will bring groundbreaking changes to user experiences in IT devices including laptops, tablets and smartwatches."
