A joint memorial for the victims of the Jeju Air plane crash will be held later this week, officials said Wednesday, as efforts to retrieve the plane wreckage were in their final stages.

Lee Han-kyung, the interior ministry's chief disaster management official, made the remark at a government response meeting, saying the joint memorial will be held Saturday in line with the wishes of the bereaved family members.

"We will listen to the voices of the bereaved family members and actively reflect their opinions," Lee said, while vowing to transparently disclose the results of the probe in every stage.

Lee noted that recovery efforts to retrieve the remains of the aircraft would be completed later in the day.

"We are also conducting a comparative analysis on the flight data recorder, the cockpit voice recorder, records from the control tower and video footage," he said, adding the runway of the Muan International Airport will be temporarily closed until the on-site inspection is finalized.

The government plans to come up with measures to improve the concrete structures housing the navigation system that assist in aircraft landings, known as localizers, found at seven local airports, including one in Gwangju and another in Yeosu, within this year.

All but two people on the Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 plane carrying 181 died after it crashed at Muan International Airport on Dec. 29. (Yonhap)
