Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo plans to attend the inauguration ceremony of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, slated for Jan. 20, at the invitation of the 60th U.S. presidential inaugural committee, the city government said Thursday.

Hong, a former right-wing presidential candidate, is scheduled to depart Sunday for Washington, D.C., where he will attend Trump's inauguration, inaugural parade and presidential dinner and the "MAGA (Make America Great Again) Victory" Rally, the city government said.

The mayor is also scheduled to meet with key figures of the new Trump administration, the South Korean ambassador there and Korean American leaders before returning home on Jan. 23, it added.

Earlier this month, Hong met with Trump's ex-campaign manager, Paul Manafort, in Seoul to exchange views on pending bilateral issues, the North Korean nuclear issue and the situation in Northeast Asia. (Yonhap)
