President Yoon Suk Yeol urged key ruling party lawmakers, who visited him at the Seoul Detention Center on Monday, to unite conservative support. The president has been held at the facility in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province, since mid-January.

During a meeting with the ruling People Power Party (PPP) leadership earlier in the day, Yoon expressed concerns about global issues, national security and the economy. He emphasized the importance of party unity, stressing that the PPP must remain cohesive. Yoon said people from different generations, including supporters in their 20s and 30s, as well as those with diverse views within the conservative bloc, should come together in an organized way to secure strong public backing.

Rep. Kwon Young-se, the party's interim leader, shared these remarks with reporters at the National Assembly after returning from his visit.

Kwon, along with two other key PPP politicians — party floor leader Kweon Seong-dong and five-term lawmaker Na Kyung-won — visited the president at the detention center around 11 a.m. on Monday. This marks the first visit by ruling party leaders to Yoon since his incarceration. The meeting reportedly lasted longer than the initially scheduled 30 minutes.

According to Na, the president told them that his decision to impose martial law on Dec. 3 was driven by a strong sense of responsibility as the leader of the country. He explained that he could not "simply stand by and watch as [the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea's] parliamentary dictatorship, through impeachment threats and budget cuts, paralyzed state affairs."

Na added that the president and the visiting lawmakers also discussed concerns over the current parliamentary situation and expressed concerns about the perceived bias of Constitutional Court justices in the ongoing impeachment trials.

Regarding the purpose of the visit, the interim party leader said, "He is a president from our party, and he is merely suspended from duty at the moment. Some lawmakers questioned why we visited him in detention, but since he was placed there, there's no way to meet him other than visiting him there."

Yoon also met with his key presidential aides, including chief of staff Chung Jin-suk, on Friday.
