Acting President Choi Sang-mok on Wednesday visited the funeral service of an 8-year-old girl, who was tragically killed by an elementary school teacher, to extend his condolences, his office said.
The visit followed a call from the victim's father, who, "despite his immense grief," publicly urged the society to take action and prevent such incidents from happening again, according to Kang Young-kyu, a spokesperson for the finance ministry.
The tragic incident occurred Monday, when a female teacher in her 40s fatally stabbed the student during after-school care at the elementary school in the central city of Daejeon.
The teacher is currently receiving hospital treatment for self-inflicted wounds following the incident, which took place in an audio-visual room on the school's second floor.
Choi has instructed a thorough investigation into the case and ordered a review of school safety standards. (Yonhap)
