Korea's deputy trade minister will visit Washington next week for talks on the shifting U.S. trade policies, including the new U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, Seoul's industry ministry said Thursday.
Deputy Minister of Trade Park Jong-won will meet with officials from the U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Trade Representative in Washington on Monday, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
Park will be the first senior trade official from here to make an official visit to the U.S. since President Donald Trump took office.
In the planned meeting, Park is expected to deliver Seoul's concerns over the U.S. government's recent moves to impose tariffs on various goods from other countries, in particular, the 25 percent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports set to be imposed March 12.
The new U.S. duties are expected to worsen already existing challenges for the steel industry here and also influence other major industries, such as automobiles and home appliances.
Park will also likely arrange Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun's visit to the U.S. in the near future.
Ahn visited Washington early last month, before Trump's inauguration, to discuss bilateral economic cooperation with U.S. parliamentary officials. (Yonhap)
