Police said Monday they will designate the Jongno and Jung districts surrounding the Constitutional Court as special crime prevention zones on the day of its ruling on President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment.
Park Hyun-soo, acting chief of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, unveiled the plan during a regular press briefing, saying the two districts will be divided into eight zones, with a local police chief overseeing safety and crowd control in each area.
Special crime prevention reinforcement zones are designated under an administrative order from the national police chief or the Seoul police chief and have been put in place previously when the country hosted the Group of 20, APEC and ASEAN summits.
Park said police will also strengthen cooperation with firefighting authorities, the interior ministry, the Seoul metropolitan government and other agencies to place ambulances and patrol cars near the court in advance.
He reaffirmed plans to mobilize all available police personnel and equipment to help prevent clashes between Yoon's supporters and detractors.
Police officers are also being trained to use expandable batons and capsaicin, a chili pepper extract, and will likely be placed under the highest level of emergency duty, which enables the mobilization of up to 100 percent of available police forces.
The Constitutional Court concluded hearings for Yoon's impeachment trial Feb. 25 but has yet to announce a date for its ruling.
If the impeachment is upheld, Yoon will be removed from office. If dismissed, he will be reinstated to serve out the remainder of his term through May 2027.
