The government has decided to maintain the current 52-hour workweek system.
정부가 현행 ‘주 52시간제'의 틀을 유지하기로 했다.
Instead, it will draw up complementary measures for some industries that need more flexibility in working hours, such as the manufacturing industry and the medical sector, the Ministry of Employment and Labor announced, Monday.
대신 고용노동부는 제조업이나 의료직 등 근로시간에 유연성이 더 필요한 일부 업종에 한해 보완방안을 마련하겠다고 월요일 발표했다.
The ministry made the decision reflecting the results of its survey of 6,030 workers, employers and the general public.
고용부는 근로자, 사업주, 일반 국민 등 6030명을 대상으로 한 설문조사 결과를 반영해 이번 결정을 내렸다.
The survey was conducted after the ministry faced severe criticism from workers as well as several experts for its previous proposal, announced on March 6, to reform the country's weekly work hour system.
이번 조사는 올해 3월 6일 발표된 주간 근로시간 제도 개편안에 대해 고용부가 근로자와 일부 전문가로부터 심각한 비판에 직면하자 실시됐다.
The proposed changes would have enabled companies to increase the maximum workweek to 69 hours during weeks with heavy workloads, and allow workers to take longer vacations later on.
제시된 개편안이 시행되면 기업은 업무량이 증가할 경우 주 최대 근로시간을 69시간까지 늘릴 수 있고 이후 근로자는 휴가를 더 길게 갈 수 있다.
Critics at the time claimed that such measures will only benefit employers and force employees to work longer hours, while longer vacations can barely be guaranteed, which led President Yoon Suk Yeol to order the ministry to review the proposed reform on March 14.
전문가들은 이러한 방안이 고용주에게만 이득이 되고, 근로자의 근로시간만 늘리고 더 긴 휴가는 거의 보장되지 않을 거라고 주장했고, 윤석열 대통령은 노동부가 지난 3월 14일 발표한 개편안을 재검토하라고 지시했다.
The country currently adopts a 52-hour work week — 40 regular hours with 12 hours of possible overtime. It was introduced in 2018 by the liberal Moon Jae-in government to reduce the maximum week from 68 hours at the time to 52.
한국은 현재 법정 40시간, 연장근로 12시간의 주52시간제를 채택하고 있다. 현행안은 주 최대근로시간을 당시 68시간에서 52시간으로 줄이기 위해 2018년 문재인 진보 정권 때 도입됐다.
