Hyundai Motor, Kia and KG Mobility are set to showcase their technological prowess in electric vehicles (EV) during the upcoming EVS 37 exhibition here in a bid to lead the upcoming era of eco-friendly mobility, the event's organizer said Wednesday.

The EVS is considered the global EV Olympics, attracting thousands of visitors from the automobile and battery industries here and abroad. The 37th event is set to begin on Tuesday and run for four days in Seoul. This year's edition is forecast to attract a record number of visitors, surpassing the previous high of 11,000 set in Norway in 2022.

Hyundai Motor and Kia will promote their purpose-built vehicles and new vehicle lineups featuring the latest auto technologies. KG Mobility — another Korean automaker — plans to display its Torres EVX and a cargo van with added space.

A group of 150 global carmakers and battery firms will also take part and display their latest achievements in EVs and relevant technologies.

Renowned auto experts and researchers here and abroad are also set to share their views on the ongoing EV chasm and looming challenges ahead of the mass adoption of EVs.

"Korea has risen to become a mecca of EVs after Hyundai Motor Group and three domestic battery firms — such as LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI and SK On — have garnered concerted efforts to take the lead in the EV market," EVS 37 Chairman Sunwoo Myoungho told reporters during a press conference.

A total of 160 global firms will set up 550 booths at COEX. Korean firms account for 63 percent of the total participating companies, followed by European players, which make up 21 percent. The figure for China and Asian firms reaches 12 percent.

Top-ranking businesspeople — including LG Science Park President Park Il-pyung and Hyundai Motor Group Executive Vice President Han Dong-hee — are also scheduled to deliver keynote speeches, so visitors can be updated as to the latest developments in the global EV industry.

Participants will be able to seek future business opportunities by holding private meetings with potential clients.

Most vehicle industry players have no doubts about the upcoming EV era, even if it takes longer for EVs to become mainstream, thereby replacing current vehicles powered by internal combustion engines.

"The EVS is a key venue for communication among automakers and industry leaders, helping them exchange their insight and discuss up-to-date trends in the global EV industry," Sunwoo said.

"The upcoming event in Seoul will particularly serve as a good chance for not just EV makers, but parts manufacturers to promote their technological competitiveness and innovation to global partners and clients."
