The ruling People Power Party (PPP) decided Thursday to propose a special counsel probe bill into impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol as its official party stance.

On Tuesday, the PPP announced its decision to introduce its own bill to probe Yoon over his failed martial law bid, refusing to pass a similar bill proposed by the opposition parties.

"All 108 lawmakers of the PPP have signed the special counsel probe bill on martial law and agreed to introduce it as the party's official line," PPP floor leader Kweon Seong-dong told reporters after a general meeting of the party's lawmakers.

The bill will likely be introduced around Friday, according to Kweon.

The PPP's decision comes as the main opposition Democratic Party ok Korea (DPK) and other opposition parties have been seeking to pass a new revised special probe bill at the National Assembly after it failed to do so by just two votes last week.

"We agreed to introduce our own special probe bill because we believe that a less-than-ideal option is still better than the worst," he said, criticizing the opposition's bill as "unconstitutional and toxic."

The DPK's second version proposes that the Supreme Court's chief justice recommend a special counsel to look into Yoon's allegations.

It also includes allegations that Yoon committed "treason" and attempted to deliberately provoke a war with North Korea.

The PPP has removed such allegations from its own version. (Yonhap)
