Rivalry heats up amid bid for $1.1 billion redevelopment project
By Park Jae-hyuk

Samsung C&T and Hyundai E&C are vying to attract landlords and homebuyers with their respective self-driving robot delivery services, designed to operate in apartment complexes.

The latest competition follows from their ongoing efforts to undermine one another in a bid to secure a 1.6 trillion won ($1.1 billion) contract for the demolition of old structures in the Hannam 4 redevelopment zone in Yongsan District, Seoul. The project involves the construction of 51 buildings on the 160,258-square-meter site, which will be integrated into the Hannam New Town development.

This marks the first time in 17 years that the construction divisions of Samsung and Hyundai Motor Group are competing for an urban redevelopment project.

Ahead of a landlords' vote on Saturday to select the company for one of the largest redevelopment projects north of the Han River, press releases were issued this week to promote the robot delivery services of Samsung C&T and Hyundai E&C.

Neubility, a Samsung-sponsored robotics startup, said Wednesday that its self-driving robots, named Neubie, have delivered food and beverages to the front doors of each unit in the Raemian Leaders One apartment complex in Seocho District, Seoul, from nearby restaurants and coffee shops.

According to the robot developer, testing of the service began last month in collaboration with Samsung C&T, a half year after its robots started delivering goods to the entrance of each building in the apartment complex built by the construction firm.

"This was the first time in Korea to provide a door-to-door delivery from an apartment complex's community center by using self-driving robots," Neubility said in a press release.

A day earlier, Hyundai E&C announced that it had become the first Korean construction firm to "commercialize" a self-driving robot delivery service.

In collaboration with Mobinn, a robotics startup sponsored by Hyundai Motor Group, the construction firm plans to use robots to provide patrol and delivery services in THE H Daechi Edellui apartment complex in Gangnam District, Seoul, which is set for completion by June.

"With our self-driving robots offering door-to-door delivery service, we proposed the construction of a robot-friendly apartment complex in the Hannam 4 redevelopment zone," Hyundai E&C said in a press release.

Samsung C&T is also set to provide robot delivery services if it wins the redevelopment project.

Additionally, the construction firm has been trying to attract voters by proposing the application of Homeniq, the company's smart home platform powered by artificial intelligence and Internet of Things technologies, which enables residents to take care of their homes with a smartphone app.
